When you connect to a network it is either set to be a private network or public network. The public one is accessible by all while the private has some restrictions for the same.

Change from Public to Private Network

When your system connects to a network for the first system you are asked whether you want it to be discoverable by others or not. That’s where the role of public & private network comes into existence.

Before proceeding further let us understand the basic difference between a public and a private network.

Change Windows 10 network location from Public to Private

First of all, you need to understand that in order to change the network location you must be signed in as an administrator. The very first time you connect to a network you will be prompted “Do you want to allow your PC to be discoverable by other PCs and devices on the network?

When this setting is turned on your PC will be prepared to share files and devices on a network. Based on the network location chosen Windows will automatically assign a network discovery state to the network. It also automatically sets required Windows Firewall and security settings.

Change network type from Public to Private

On Windows 7

To switch a network from Public to Private on Windows 7, you need to follow the steps as given under.

  • First of all, click the link right below the network’s name and set them to either “Home’s network“, ” Work Network” or “Public Network“.
  • A Home Network is like a public network while a Work Network is like a private one where discovery is enabled.
  • But Homegroup sharing isn’t enabled on the last one.

On Windows 10

To switch a network from Public to Private on Windows 10, you need to follow the steps as given under.

  • If you are using a wifi connection, connect to the one you want to change.
  • Launch the Settings apps and select Network and Internet.
  • Choose wifi, scroll down and tap Advanced options.
  • But in case of wired Ethernet, connect to that network.
  • Launch the Settings apps and select Network and Internet.
  • Choose Ethernet and click the name of your Ethernet connection.
  • The option “Make this PC discoverable” controls whether a network is public or private.
  • When it is set to be ON, windows will treat it as private. But when set to OFF, windows will treat it as a public one.

What’s the Difference Between Private and Public Networks?

By default, on Private networks, Windows allow network discovery features while on public networks this feature is turned off. Windows assume that your private networks are full of devices you want to connect to.

When the network is connected for the first time Windows asks whether you want your PC to be discoverable and when tapped YES, the network sets as Private. If No is selected, the network is set to Public.
